Key Information
The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only route on Mount Kilimanjaro with hut accommodations. It offers a relatively gradual ascent and is considered one of the easier paths to the summit, though still challenging due to altitude.
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Begin the 5 Days Kilimanjaro hike via Marangu Route with a scenic trek through lush rainforest after completing registration at Marangu Gate. Enjoy sightings of unique flora and playful blue monkeys along the 8 km trail. Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m) for dinner and overnight. Optional visit to Maundi Crater.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, ascend through rainforest into moorland as Kilimanjaro’s twin peaks—Mawenzi and Kibo—come into view. This 12 km hike takes 6–8 hours, ending at Horombo Hut (3,720m), where you’ll acclimatize and spend the night.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The 5 Days Kilimanjaro hike via Marangu Route continues across the Saddle, a vast alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. The 10 km trek leads to Kibo Hut (4,700m), base for the summit push. Early dinner and rest in preparation for the midnight climb.
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak – Summit Day, then Descend to Horombo Hut
Depart at midnight for the summit attempt. Reach Gilman’s Point (5,685m) in time for sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebrations, descend to Horombo Hut (total of 22 km hiking). This is the highlight of the Kilimanjaro hike.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Descend 20 km through moorland and forest to Marangu Gate. Celebrate completion of the 5 Days Kilimanjaro hike via Marangu Route with your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for rest and optional post-climb adventures.
