Key Information
The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most scenic and popular trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers gradual acclimatization, diverse landscapes, and breathtaking views.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The 7 Days Kilimanjaro hike – Machame route begins with a scenic drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. After registration and briefing, you’ll start trekking through lush rainforest, where you might spot monkeys and exotic birds. The day ends at Machame Camp.
Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Cave Camp
Today, the trail moves into moorland. As you leave the rainforest, vast views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau emerge. You’ll arrive at Shira Cave Camp in the afternoon.
Elevation: 3,000m to 3,840m
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Day 3: Shira Cave to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
This is a crucial acclimatization day on your 7 Days Kilimanjaro hike – Machame route. You’ll ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m), have lunch, and then descend to the scenic Barranco Camp through giant groundsels and Senecio trees.
Elevation: 3,840m to 3,960m (via 4,630m)
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, climb the iconic Barranco Wall. Though it looks intimidating, it’s a fun and rewarding scramble. Traverse ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp.
Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today you join the Mweka Route and climb steadily to Barafu Camp, the launch point for your summit attempt. Spend the evening preparing and resting for the final push.
Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Summit night starts after midnight. Reach Stella Point at sunrise and then push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Celebrate briefly, then descend all the way to Mweka Camp.
Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m to 3,100m
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Your 7 Days Kilimanjaro hike – Machame route ends with a descent through lush forest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and celebrate your incredible achievement.
