Day 6: Masai Mara National Reserve
The Masai Mara is Kenya’s premier wildlife sanctuary, with every aspect of the reserve being exceptional. The wildlife is plentiful, and the gently rolling grasslands ensure that animals are always within view. The birdlife is equally abundant, featuring a wide range of migrant species and 53 types of birds of prey. The wildlife doesn’t stay confined within the reserve’s boundaries; a much larger area, often called the ‘dispersal area,’ stretches to the north and east of the reserve. The park’s first sight is truly awe-inspiring. Here, massive herds of elephants graze among the lush, tree-dotted grasslands, occasionally accompanied by the solitary figure of a grumpy rhino. Thousands of plains herbivores, including Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, topi, and eland, provide a rich food source for the park’s dominant predators: lion, leopard, and cheetah, all of which roam this untouched wilderness.
