Key Information
The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most scenic and popular trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers gradual acclimatization, diverse landscapes, and breathtaking views.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The journey begins with a drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate, which takes about fifty minutes. The drive passes through the picturesque village of Machame, located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing the registration process at the park gate, the trek commences through a dense rain forest along a winding trail that ascends a ridge. As we move deeper into the forest, we experience its lush vegetation and diverse wildlife. The day ends upon reaching Machame Camp, where we set up for the night.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Cave Camp
Leaving the rain forest behind, we ascend further into the moorlands. The trail steepens as we climb a rocky ridge before reaching the Shira Plateau. Here, the terrain changes to heather and open moorlands, providing breathtaking views of the mountain. The route crosses a large river gorge before arriving at Shira Cave Camp, where we set up camp and spend the night.
Day 3: Shira Cave Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp
The trek continues eastward as we ascend a ridge before turning southeast toward the Lava Tower, a striking 300-foot volcanic rock formation. This challenging climb to an altitude of over 15,000 feet aids in acclimatization. After a short break at the Lava Tower, we descend into the unique Senecio Forest and continue our journey to Barranco Camp. Although we begin and end the day at a similar elevation, the time spent at higher altitudes is crucial for acclimatization and preparing the body for the summit.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day starts with a descent into a ravine, leading to the base of the Great Barranco Wall. This nearly 900-foot cliff is steep but non-technical, requiring careful footing and steady climbing. After reaching the top of the Barranco Wall, the route traverses rolling hills and valleys before a sharp descent into Karanga Valley. A final steep ascent brings us to Karanga Camp, where we rest and prepare for the following day’s climb.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Leaving Karanga Camp, we ascend toward the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail. The climb becomes increasingly rocky as we approach Barafu Camp. At this point, we have completed the Southern Circuit, which provides spectacular views of the summit from different angles. Upon reaching Barafu Camp, we settle in for the night with an early dinner, resting in preparation for the summit push.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
Shortly after midnight, we begin our final ascent to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This is the most challenging portion of the trek, both mentally and physically, as the wind and cold intensify in the darkness. Frequent but brief breaks help maintain stamina as we make our way up. Approaching Stella Point at an elevation of 18,900 feet, we witness an unforgettable sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. The journey continues to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 19,341 feet.
After taking in the breathtaking views and capturing memorable moments, we begin our descent. The return journey takes us back down to Barafu Camp for a short break before continuing toward Mweka Camp. The descent is demanding on the knees due to the rocky terrain, and trekking poles can be helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper rain forest, where mist and rain are common in the late afternoon. Here, we enjoy our final dinner on the mountain and a well-earned rest.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
On the final day of the trek, we descend from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. The trail can be muddy and slippery at lower elevations, requiring careful navigation. Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, we collect our summit certificates before proceeding to Mweka Village, where a vehicle awaits to transfer us back to the hotel in Moshi. Here, you can relax and celebrate your incredible achievement of conquering Mount Kilimanjaro.
